The following adventure game will ask you to make a series of choices in order to complete certain tasks to reach a goal. Many choices in the game require honest answers. You are free to answer choices however you wish, but for the most authentic experience it is asked that you make each choice truthful to your character. Be wary and be well, dangers lie ahead...

Note: For an even more immersive experience, it is recommended to play the "D&D Ambient" playlist on Spotify or any other adventure background music that you like while you play the game.Chapter 1: Stormlash
Welcome to Stormlash, a coastal town on the western border of the country of Rowen. You have been sent here by court order of the mayor, Townmaster Olaf Wester. All you have brought with you are 10 gold pieces, a map of the country, your summons, and a change of clothes.
[[Next->The Gates of Stormlash]]You walk down a wide dirt road that turns into cobblestone as you approach the city gates. You are welcomed by two guards clad in armor and holding shields and spears. They direct you to a message board that contains a map of the town.
Stormlash has 6 main locations:
[[Rockcliff Inn]]
[[Pollock's Provisions]]
[[Boar’s Head Tavern]]
[[Miner’s Exchange]]
[[Shrine of Luck]]
[[Townmaster’s Hall]]

This grand, three-story inn has twenty rooms for rent on the second and third floors and a bar and lounge area on the first floor. The proprietor is a plump, friendly woman named Mudka who welcomes you with open arms...er, well, arm. She only has one arm, but you hardly notice from her enthusiastic hospitality.

[[Leave]]This is a standard, one-room general store with goods for sale. The shop is currently closed for business while the owner is away on leave to gather more inventory.
[[Leave]]Hanging above the door to this building is a wooden sign carved in the shape of a circle. A red boar’s head is painted on the front.
This tavern is the hangout spot for thugs and bandits. A large man in studded leather armor stands outside the door to the tavern.

[[Talk to the Bouncer]]
[[Leave]]Miners and adventurers come here to have their valuable finds weighed, measured, and paid out. The exchange also serves as an unofficial records office, registering claims to various streams and excavations around the area. Enough wealth is hidden in the nearby streams and valleys to support a good number of independent prospectors. The Exchange is also a great place to meet people who spend a lot of time out and about in the countryside surrounding Stormlash.

[[Sell Valuables to the Guildmaster]]
[[Leave]]The Shrine of Luck is dedicated to Tymora, goddess of luck and good fortune. The shrine is located at the top of the cliff at the edge of Stormlash overlooking the sea. Large waves crash along the cliff below and birds can be viewed sweeping up and down the rocky shore. A stone archway with a basin beneath it is placed so that the setting sun shines through it over the ocean.
If you have anything of value, you can place it into the basin as an offering to Tymora. Would you like to make an offering?
[[Yes->Tymora's Bleassing]]
[[No->Leave]]The Townmaster’s Hall is a stone building with a pitched wooden roof and a bell tower in the back. When you enter, a guard escorts you to Olaf who is sitting at his desk looking distressed.
[[Meet Olaf]]"Hello!" shouts Mudka across the rowdy bar, "New to town, I see? Would you like to rent a room? Only 1 gold piece for the night!"
[[Yes->Room Rental]]
[[No->Free drink]]You discover a group of ruffians playing cards (very loudly) and drinking at a nearby table. One of them catches your eye and invites you over to play. If you win, he says, he’ll buy you a drink. But if you lose, you’ll have to pay the price.
Are you in?
[[Yes->Cards]]
[[No->Leave]]You head back out into town and check out the town map.

If you have visited Townmaster Olaf and are ready to start your quest, [[Begin Journey]]."Wonderful! If you're staying in town awhile, you should check out the Shrine of Luck. I find it to be one of the most beautiful places in all of Rowen."
You are shown your room for the night and have a well-earned rest after your long travels to Stormlash. In the morning you are treated to breakfast at the bar.

[[Leave]] "No coin, eh? Don't sweat it, we've all been there. Here! Have a drink on me, and welcome to Stormlash, friend."
Mudka offers you a pint of ale which catches the eye of a group of ruffians playing cards (very loudly) and drinking at a nearby table. One of them invites you over to play. If you win, he says, he’ll buy you a drink. But if you lose, you’ll have to pay the price.

[[No->Leave]]"The name of the game is "Find the Lady," says one of the men with a scraggly beard and a gold tooth gleaming in his mouth. "I'll shuffle three cards - " He holds up a Queen and two aces. " - and you tell me where the lady is, alright?"
The card dealer shuffles the three cards in front of you, eyeing you as he does so.
"Ok," he says placing the cards facedown on the table, "Where's the lady?"
[[Card 1->Broken Bottle]]
[[Card 2->Broken Bottle]]
[[Card 3->Another free drink]]"Uh oh, boss," says the man with false pity as he holds up an ace, "Guess you gotta pay the price."
Before you can react, the man grabs his beer mug from the table and smashes it over your head.
[[Nice shootin', Ace]]"Well, I'll be damned," says the man holding up a Queen, "You can't see through these cards, can you?"
Begrudingly, the man buys you a pint of ale before you head back into town.
[[Next->Leave]]You wake up on the outskirts of a town without any idea how you got there. Reaching into your pocket you find a summons requiring you to report to the town of Stormlash to visit Townmaster Olaf Wester. You head towards the nearby town to seek help.
[[Next->The Gates of Stormlash]] The large man ignores your first attempts at conversation, but eventually gives you his attention. He informs you that entrance into the Boar's Head Tavern is only granted to those who know the password.
"Do you know the password?"
[["Uh...Rumplestiltskin?]]
[[No->Leave]]The large man hardly has to lift a finger, but his punch feels like a canon ball to the head.
[[Next->Nice shootin', Ace]] You see three interesting characters: a large, tough-looking, but friendly man, a slender, stern-looking old man, and a young, klutzy, and noisy young woman.
Who would you like to talk to?
[[Big Man]]
[[Old Man]]
[[Young Woman]]The Guildmaster is currently busy with another customer and shoos you away with little concern for your valuables.
[[Rude.->Miner’s Exchange]] The man introduces himself as Triborn and tells you that he works for the Lord Protector of Neverwinter, a city to the south of Stormlash, where he rebuilds the city's fortifications. He tells you that the city is a thriving hub of culture, food, and people, but he warns of the dangers within Neverwinter Wood just to the northeast of the city's borders.
[[Good to know.->Miner’s Exchange]] As you approach the old man at the corner table he is sitting at, he draws his cloak tighter around his face. Only after much prodding and poking does he reveal that his name is Ky and that he is a member of the Zhentarium, a shadowy organization that seeks to exert secret control over the North through wealth and influence.
[[Sounds pretty shifty... ->Miner’s Exchange]] The young woman eagerly introduces herself as Pip in a squeaky voice. She informs you that she comes from a small village at the southern base of Neverwinter Wood, a forest to the southeast of Stormlash. She’s airy and vague in her descriptions, never giving you a straight answer to anything, but she does tell you that she must run home quickly to make it to the Fairy Festival which is just three days away.
[[Strange... ->Miner’s Exchange]] Your offering disppears in a faint green mist as you put it in the basin and it is replaced with a single bronze token. This token is worth 1 Extra Life. Should you make a decision that costs you your life, you may use this token to avoid returning to the last checkpoint.
[[Lucky!->Leave]]"You've finally made it! Thank the gods. Sit, sit! I'm sure you're wondering why I've summoned you all this way."
[[Yes->Summoning]]"Stormlash faces an imminent threat from Neverwinter Wood. There have been rumors of a beast in the middle of the forest, and every soldier that I've sent has not returned."
[[I'm stronger than any of your soldiers!->Quest]]
[[And what makes you think I will?->Quest]]"I hear that you are quite the warrior and have a reputation for being quick-witted as well as skilled in battle. That’s good, because the journey ahead will challenge you with monsters, puzzles, and tricks. Be cautious, but also be daring, and put an end to the beast that threatens the people of the region. If you do, I will make you a war hero more famous than any legend before you and will pay you a handsome sum."
[[I will gladly take on this beast, Townmaster.->Challenge Accepted]]
[[Well I guess if you insist...->Challenge Accepted]]"Excellent! Please, please - come take a look at my personal armory to aid you in your journey."

[[Begin Journey]]Chapter 2: Neverwinter Wood
This marks the first checkpoint in the game. Should you die beyond this point, you will be brought back to the beginning of this chapter.
[[Much Appreciated->On the Road]]You head southeast to Neverwinter Wood on a dirt road about 20 miles long. The journey is tiring, but you make it to the edge of the forest with little trouble. You settle down for the night and are awoken by a strange noise - actually, two strange noises. One is a deep purring and rustling of branches coming from deep within the western region of the forest. The other is a sort of cheering accompanied by music towards the south, and if you look very closely you can make out a dim light where the noise seems to be coming from.
Which noise do you investigate?
[[Purring in the West]]
[[Celebrating in the South]]You abandon the dirt road you were walking on and head into Neverwinter Wood. The trees seem to envelope you in darkness, but the full moon casts a bluish glow on the foliage around you. The deeper you go, the louder the purring becomes until it is nearly shaking you.
[[Spooky->Large Creature]]You come across a small village of people who live in peace out of range of monsters and travellers. Despite their reclusive nature, they are a welcoming bunch and greet you openly (and are not the brightest, easily distracted by simplicities like children). They offer you food and drink and invite you to participate in something called the Fairy Festival.
[[Kind of rings a bell...]]You see up ahead a very large animal, about the size of an elephant, eating a massacred doe. The creature has the head of a human, the body of a lion, and the tail of a scorpion. Before you can make an action, the creature notices you.
<img src="https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stf117_conqueringman.png" width="500" height="300" alt="manticore">
“Hello, traveller. I am the manticore. I don’t care to hear about whatever adventurous ambitions have you galavanting in these woods, but if you wish to continue them you must answer my riddle. Are you ready?”
[[Absolutely]]
[[Did you say manticore..?]]"Good. Now listen close, and listen well..."
[[Riddle]]"Stupid human. I don’t care if you're ready or not. You will listen to my riddle anyways."
[[Riddle]]“I am passed from father to son, and shared between brothers. My importance is unquestioned, though I am used more by others.
What am I?"
[[An heirloom]]
[[A secret]]

[[Well that didn't go as planned.->Death]]
[[Sike! I've got an Extra Life!->Riddle]]The manticore smiles a knowing smile. "Well done. You have passed my riddle. You may travel these woods without any trouble from me, but be wary, traveller. The forest has many more dangers within."
What would you like to do?
[[Travel Deeper into Neverwinter Wood->Into the Woods]]
[[Investigate the other noise->Celebrating in the South]] You awake at the edge of Neverwinter Wood in a cold sweat after having a terrible nightmare. You are about to go back to sleep when you hear a strange noise - actually, two strange noises. One is a deep purring and rustling of branches coming from deep within the western region of Neverwinter Wood. The other is a sort of cheering accompanied by music towards the south, and if you look very closely you can make out a dim light where the noise seems to be coming from.
Which noise do you investigate?
[[Purring in the West]]
[[Celebrating in the South]] Continuing on your quest, you venture deeper into Neverwinter Wood and come across an abandoned shrine to Tempus, god of storms. The shrine features three stone statues in the center of a circle of dead grass, almost like a lightning bolt struck the ground around it. There are no trees within the shrine and a circular clearing let’s the night sky illuminate the statues.
[[Inspect the shrine]]Upon your arrival, you meet Pip. She takes you to the village elder, a weathered old man named Sip. Sip is decorated in vines, flowers, branches, and other natural objects. You notice that all of the townsfolk wear similar garnishes, but Sip definitely has the most.
"Hello, traveller," says Sip in a croaky voice similar to a frog, "Are you here for the Fairy Festival? If so, you are welcome to camp in our village for the night."
[[What's the Fairy Festival?]]You follow the villagers into a clearing not far from their village. They all crouch behind bushes and trees, using their natural attire to blend in with their surroundings. You find a large rock to hide behind and not long after see a burst of color shine through the trees ahead of you. Hundreds of fairies in a kaleidoscope of colors dance across the forest floor.
You notice that the fairies are carrying 3 magic items. You will only have time to go for 1 of them. You can't see the items that well from behind the rock, but you can make out their general form.
You see...
[[A Pair of Gauntlets->Fail]]
[[A rod about one foot long->Fail]]
[[A long sword->Success]]
Which item do you go for?You sneak from behind the rock and through the tall grass, trying not to make a sound. You are only a few feet behind the fairies, the item just in your grasp, when a loud CRUNCH from beneath your foot puts all eyes on you. You curse at the stick that just snapped beneath your foot and sprint away as fast you can from the herd of fairies getting ready to swarm you.
[[Run!->Crossroads]]You sneak around the rock you are hiding behind and grab the attention of Pip. Using her nature attire, she provides cover for you as you inch your way closer to the fairies. Reaching out a steady hand, you wrap your fingers around the hilt of a long sword being carried by a group of fairies. As you pull the sword towards you, Pip provides the fairies with a large stick to carry instead, distracting them from noticing your actions.
[[Pickpocketing Increased to 100]]After the Fairy Festival is over, Sip inspects your stolen item and informs you that it is a magical weapon forged from dragon's blood. The blade is known as Dragon Slayer and causes extra damage on all attacks against dragons.
What would you like to do?
[[Investigate the other noise->Purring in the West]]
[[Forge on farther into the forest->Into the Woods]]You approach the statue of the man with the unbalanced scales and place a few stones onto the scale that is higher than the other. The scales become balanced, causing the second statue to shoot her arrow at the foot of the third statue. This action causes him to throw his battle axe at the stone wall where it carves the following letters into the stone:
K H I E C D B O _
The battle axe then falls to the ground below a final blank space at the end of the series of letters, allowing you to carve in the final symbol.
What do you carve?
[[G]]
[[L]]
[[M]]
[[S]]
[[X]]Nothing happens.
[[Back to statues->Inspect the shrine]]The statues feature a thin man holding unbalanced scales, an athletic woman wielding a notched bow, and a stout old man holding a battleaxe that appears to be rusted over. In front of the statues is a stone wall appearing to be blank.
What would you like to do?
[[Interact with the first statue->Puzzle]]

[[Interact with the third statue->Nothing]]You hear the sound of grinding stones as the second statue notches another arrow and aims straight for your head. She releases the grip on her bow and her stone arrow hits you right between the eyes.

[[Goodnight.]]
[[Sike! I've got an Extra Life!->Puzzle]]You notice that if you draw a line across each of the letters, they are all symmetrical when cut in half. As you carve the letter "X" into the stone wall to complete the pattern, you feel the winds begin to pick up and push aside the trees to form a path to the center of Neverwinter Wood. You follow the path cautiously but curiously and find that it leads you to a large collection of rocks that form a makeshift cave. Pulling a torch kit from your pack, you venture into the cave.
[[Let's go->Chapter 3]]You awake dazed and confused on the side of a dirt road. You had the craziest dream that someone shot you in the face with an arrow. Oh well, it was just a crazy dream, right? Now, back to the adventure!
[[Onward!->On the Road]]Chapter 3: The Beast of Neverwinter Wood
This Chapter marks the second and final checkpoint in the game. Should you die from this point on, you will be directed back to this page.
[[Thank the gods for checkpoints]]The cave is dank and smells of death, but you continue on, your torch providing a faint light. As you walk down the stony passageway, you can make out piles of bones lining the walls of the cave. You recognize some of them to be wearing the armor of the guards of Stormlash.
[[A brave man's choice is danger]]As you continue on, you see a dim light up ahead of you. Wanting to avoid detection, you extinguish your torch and investigate the source of the light.
[[Like a moth to a flame]]You discover that at the end of the passageway the cave opens up into a large room filled with treasures from ceiling to floor. Silver goblets, jewel-encrusted crowns, golden shields, and thousands of other valuables all reflect the moonlight that streams into the cave through a large opening in the ceiling big enough to fit…
[[A dragon!]]Sleeping soundly at the foot of the piles of treasures is a 20 foot long silver dragon. Billows of smoke escape its nostrils with each breath and the scent of death lingers in the room.

[[Go for broke and attack while its guard is down.->Risk it all]]You slowly make your way around the outskirts of the room, carefully avoiding the many treasures that litter the ground. You’re almost halfway around the room when the dragon lets out a deafening snore, startling you and causing you to stumble into a pile of coins that clatter on the stone floor.
The dragon awakes and is not happy to find you messing with its collection. It reels back on its hind legs and sends a wall of fire directly at you.
[[Jump out of the way!]]
[[Use your shield!]]Drawing your weapon, you aim straight for the dragon’s closed eye. As your weapon hits, the dragon reels up in a terrifying rage, screeching in pain and unleashing a wall of fire around the room.
[[Jump out of the way!]]
[[Use your shield!]]The dragon’s fire barely misses you and you can feel the heat on your back from the pile of the coins that the dragon just melted. You scramble to your feet and prepare to defend yourself.
[[Good reflexes!]]Unfortunately, Olaf’s armory does not include magical weapons and your shield is not fire-proof. The dragon lets out a happy puff of smoke at having turned you to a pile of ash.

[[Parry with your weapon!]]You avoid damage as the dragon clenches its teeth around your shield, biting a chunk out of the metal. Your shield is now useless, but better your shield than your head.
[[True]]You meet the jaws of the beast with your weapon, sinking the metal into the exposed, soft muscle of its mouth. The dragon recoils in pain, grazing your arm with its sharp teeth in the process. You drop your weapon and grasp your good hand over the wound to try and stop the blood.
[[Hope you're not woozy]]You abandon your ruined shield and draw your weapon against the dragon. From the corner of your eye, you see a large object coming at you fast.
[[Jump!]]
[[Duck!]]With only one good arm, you need to think of a Plan B, and fast. You franitcally gaze around the cave and notice a large mass of rocks being supported only by a small stone just above a tall mound of treasure. In the heat of the moment, you come up with a bizarre plan that just might work. You hurl your weapon across the room to distract the dragon and make a mad dash in the opposite direction towards the mound of treasure.
[[This better work]]As the object moves closer, you jump to avoid it, only to realize that the object is the claws of the dragon and you've just jumped right into the palm of its hand. Hungry for a light snack, the dragon lifts you into its maw and swallows you whole.

You hurl your weapon across the room to distract the dragon and make a mad dash in the opposite direction towards the mound of treasure.
[[This better work]]The dragon screams in pain as it crumbles to the floor of the cave, dark blood oozing out of the wound in its chest. In just a few seconds, the dragon becomes motionless and dies at the hands of your bravery. You slowly walk over to the corpse of the beast and pluck your sword from its flesh, giving the dragon a swift kick to make sure it really is dead. [[Homeward bound]]With the dragon distracted for a few seconds, you scramble up the mound of treasure sending trophies, jewelry, and fine dining ware flying behind you. The clutter causes the dragon to turn its attention back on you. You only have a few seconds, so you better act fast. You reach the pile of rocks and get a firm grip on the small stone holding them in place, positioning yourself so that you are out of the way of the future rock slide.
[[Pull!]]The stone budges slightly, but is buried pretty deep under all those rocks and treasure. The dragon begins to stumble towards you.
[[Pull!->Second try]]The rocks begin to slide out of place, but it's going to take more than that to cause a rocky avalanche. As the dragon reaches the bottom of the mound of treasure, you clench your jaw and summon all the strength you have to make one final pull.

With great satisfaction, you wipe the sweat from your forehead and make your way down to the lifeless body of the beast.
